Our History

125 Years of Camaraderie, Satire, and Service

The Military Order of the Carabao

The Military Order of the Carabao stands as one of the most unique, enduring organizations in American military history. What began as a lighthearted joke among officers far from home has evolved over the last century and a quarter into a prestigious, tight-knit fellowship bridging generations of defense leadership.

The Campfire Jibe
November 1900

During the Philippine Insurrection following the Spanish-American War, a group of U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine Corps officers gathered at the Army-Navy Club in Manila. Tired of the stuffy, ultra-formal military societies back home—particularly the Military Order of the Dragon formed during the Boxer Rebellion—they decided to create a spoof organization.

Naming the Herd
1901

The officers named their new order after the hard-working, patient carabao (the water buffalo) that pulled their supply wagons through the thick Philippine mud. They leaned heavily into the satire, calling their leadership council the “Main Corral,” the general membership “The Herd,” and individual members “Bulls” or “Calves.”

The First Annual Wallow
1901

The traditions traveled back to Washington, D.C., where the very first “Annual Wallow” was held. The dinner quickly became a staple of the D.C. social calendar, famous for its live musical gridiron shows, political roasts, and unscripted humor where the highest ranks of leadership could let their guard down.

Expanding the Campaign Scope
Mid-20th Century to Present

As the original “Days of Empire” veterans grew remote, the Order evolved. Membership criteria became elastic, welcoming officers and veterans who served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and modern global conflicts, ensuring the living torch of cross-generational military fellowship continues to burn bright.

Historical Memorabilia & Traditions

As with most great jests, the Order contained a serious ingredient that gradually rose to eclipse the initial joke: a deep, profound camaraderie born from facing the dangers and privations of military service far from home. This unique balance of prestige and playfulness is perfectly captured in our traditional artifacts.

The Insignia of the Order

The official medal and symbols of the Carabao mirror the playful structure of the group. While traditional military societies featured aggressive eagles or elegant lions, our official medallions proudly feature the head of the water buffalo, flanked by the names of foundational campaign locations such as Zamboanga, Sulu, and Vigan. It serves as a reminder to every member that while our duty to the nation is serious, we should never take ourselves too seriously.

Did You Know? The original Military Order of the Dragon the pompous group the Carabaos were founded to satirize disbanded many decades ago. The Carabao has survived for 125 years and counting, proving that true fellowship outlasts stuffy protocol every single time.
